sunhacks is a yearly Fall hackathon (ideathon, coding marathon, prototyping marathon, etc) designed to support students in their innovative journeys. sunhacks is for students of all skill levels, and our job as organizers is to support you by providing the resources you need to achieve your development dreams. We provide you with workshops, mentors, community connections, and peers who are motivated to help each other succeed and reach their goals.
This year, things are different. With the current situation and times ahead, we've have great news to share about this year's event!
completely virtual
We'll be using Discord, Twitch, and other streaming and platforms to host our virtual hackathon.
more accessible
We are open to all skill levels, ages, background, fields, and more. As long as you're a student you're in!
virtual workshops
We'll have our usual variety of workshops online and accessible through our online platform!
We know that things can be pretty intimidating when there's a lot of unknowns, so check out the some what ifs below! If you still have questions email us at [email protected]
hackathon?
Hackathons carry a lot of connotations, but we do our best to make sure that sunhacks is every bit of beginner friendly that we can make it. We don't hack into things, but we do build things! As long as there's even a sliver of interest in coding, we are ready (as is the community) to get you started. Unlike other specialty hackathons, sunhacks is a very open-minded, open-field, open-everything kind of hackathon. we support code and hardware hacks. Who knows, maybe you might even make a new type of hack!
what do I do at a hackathon?
Up to you! You will have the opportunity to network with our sponsors and other hackers, attend workshops to learn new skills, demonstrate your project in an awesome presentation to our judges, and have fun kicking it with everyone during activities! Find/bring a team or work on your own and knock out a prototype for an idea that'll knock our judges socks off
I don't know how to code / I don't think I'm good enough to attend
Hey friend, we understand those feelings. You are absolutely welcome and encouraged to attend our hackathon. The unknown is daunting, but we're here to help. Many of our organizers have felt the same way too, and it's because we know how you feel that we've made sunhacks the way it is today: an open community that empowers and supports each other. Our mentors look forward to your questions--no question is too simple. Welcome new hacker, we look forward to seeing you :)
I'm stuck at home with no technology to work with!
That's okay! As long as you have a computer and a brain you can figure something out. There's a lot of online code editors and simulators out there, and one of our speakers will also have an opportunity for you to leverage their servers for certain work! That said, whoever said you HAVE to have a coding project? We certainly didn't, and we sure as heck have a prize category that accommodates projects that are little to no code!
what are the tracks / why aren't there any tracks?
sunhacks likes to challenge the status quo as well as also provide its hackers with the freedom to innovate. We don't use tracks, but we do make sure we can accommodate the wide variety of ideas our participants can have! so come, be creative, and challenge yourself to think outside the track!
